European Women's Forum Beijing +15: Gender equality as an instrument of social progress
Gender equality is not only an instrument of justice, but also "an important lever for social progress", said Spain's Minister of Equality, Bibiana Aído, at the opening of the European Women's Forum Beijing +15 on Thursday in Cadiz.

Daphne should stand alone, says Women's Rights Committee
Daphne, the EU programme seeking to combat violence against children, young people and women, is a success and should not be merged with efforts to prevent drug abuse, according to the Women's Rights Committee. Adopting a first reading report on the Commission's proposal to establish new programme for 2007-2013 on the "Fight against violence (Daphne) and drugs prevention and information" the committee called for two separate programmes.

International Women's Day. Red card to forced prostitution
With a view to tomorrow's International Women's Day, Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President René van der Linden today urged the organisation's member states as well as the European Community to adhere to the Convention on action against trafficking in human beings. "Whilst fully supporting all current initiatives for a "red card to forced prostitution", I hope we can avoid yellow cards for our member states for not having taken the necessary legal action to prevent trafficking in genral, and forced prostitution in particular," he said

Conference to discuss effectiveness of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities in Europe
A conference of public officials, NGOs and expertsis being held in Strasbourg on 30 and 31 October 2003, to mark the fifth anniversary of the entry into force of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. The participants will examine the achievements and effectiveness of the Convention, and discuss the major challenges it will face in the years ahead.
