Towards a global partnership in the information society: way forward for the EU
The European Commission's view of the Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action agreed by UN Member States as a basis for a common approach to the Information Society are set out in a Commission Communication issued today. This Communication assesses the key results of the December 2003 Geneva World Summit on Information Society (WSIS).

NEW SAFETY STANDARDS FOR MOBILE PHONES
Mobile phone manufacturers have to comply with strict limits set forth by a new electromagnetic safety standard, defined by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation ("CENELEC"). The standard was set out by the Council of Ministers in consideration of the limits proposed by the International Committee on non-Ionising Radiation Protection ("ICNIRP").

Satellite Services: The European Regulatory Framework*
One of the first major steps towards liberalisation of telecommunications services was achieved with the Commission’s Services Directive of 28 June 1990 . Its objective was to introduce competition in the provision of telecommunications services.

SATELLITE SERVICES IN EUROPE:HARMONIOUS LIBERALISATION ?
On 13 October 1994, the Commission adopted Directive 94/46 . This Directive purports to open to competition the satellite services and equipment sector by amending the Services Directive in order to extend its application to cover all types of satellite services (except telephony and telex).
