Pascal Maurer, former Chairman of the Geneva Bar and former President of the Federation of European Bars and renowned criminal lawyer, officially became President of the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA - International Association of Lawyers) during the closing ceremony of the association's Istanbul (Turkey) congress held on 2 November 2010.

An air carrier may not as a general rule refuse to pay compensation to passengers following the cancellation of a flight on account of technical problems in the aircraft. Compensation may however be refused if the technical problems stem from events which, by their nature or origin, are not inherent in the normal exercise of the activity of the air carrier and are beyond its actual control.

MEPs call for a Constitution by 2009
EP calls for a Constitution to enter into force in 2009 The European Parliament has given its view on how to overcome the constitutional crisis. The report adopted argues that no further enlargement, after Romania and Bulgaria, is possible on the basis of the Treaty of Nice and calls for a Constitution for 2009, to ensure a democratic and effective EU. MEP also stress the need of a broad public debate on the future of European integration guided by common topics and with clear political goals.

Market Abuse: proposed Directive on insider dealing and market manipulation
The draft Directive on insider dealing and market manipulation was published following a European proposal and is currently under discussion and consultation with member states. It is due to come into force by the end of 2002. The aim of the draft Directive is to ensure the itegrity of European financial markets, to establish and implement common standards against market abuse throughout Europe and to enhance investor confidence in those markets.
